Everything in order
funBOOK manages telephone numbers in any number of WorkBooks. Each WorkBook record consists of a name, call
number and a memory slot (on the mobile or a SIM card). As the length of a name record in mobile phones is
usually restricted, and no distinction is made between first names and surnames, many lists have two different
views, the original view and the view on the mobile phone.
A characteristic of each WorkBook is the telephone directory format. This can be used, for instance, to assign
single WorkBook entries to groups. Telephone directories without a group function can, of course, also be processed.
WorkBook entries can be processed, duplicated or deleted. They can be copied into another WorkBook or transferred
directly to a mobile phone. Telephone numbers can be dialled automatically over the mobile phone. An entry can be
assigned to a preferred memory slot on the SIM card or in the memory bank on the mobile.
A WorkBook can be opened, created, duplicated or deleted using the WorkBook function.
Child's play
The graphical user interface with the Start Center, popup menus and lots of icons make funBOOK simple to use.
Wizards, tool tips and the help integrated in every dialog mean greater convenience of use
Importing into funBOOK
Telephone numbers can be imported into a WorkBook from a Palm address book, a mobile phone or from another
WorkBook.
When importing from a mobile phone, the
current telephone directory is first transferred from the mobile by infrared or over a serial
link. When importing from a Palm address book, the user can choose between simple or complex
compilation rules to define how the name on the mobile phone is to be composed from the
first name, surname or the company name. If required, a type designation can also be attached to
the name, e.g. to differentiate between business and private numbers. A preview function helps
when defining the rules. If only certain sections of addresses are to be imported, these
can be selected individually or by using the convenient filter rules.
Importing entries from the address book allows you to integrate names and telephone numbers from the
address book application of the Palm Organizer. All names and phone numbers are initially shown in a list,
with an icon symbolising the telephone number category: Work, Private, Fax, Other, Firm, Pager or Mobile.
The numbers can then either be marked individually for transfer or selected using a filter. Each field
in the address book can be chosen as a selection criteria using the powerful filter. For example, it is
possible to select every work call number in the post code area > 70000 with a memo box containing the
text "Call".
As only relatively short names can be stored in the mobile phone's telephone directory, and no
differentiation is made between first names, surnames or firm names, a
name composition rule can
be used to determine how the name is to be shown on the mobile phone. In addition to the simple
composition rules "First Name, Surname", "Surname, First Name", "Firm, Surname" und "Surname, Firm",
more complex rules can also be defined. The maximum length of the individual components and the
overall length can be defined as appropriate. The settings for the selected addresses are shown
immediately in a preview window.
Two views are available, which show the how entries look before and after import. A
target group
can be immediately defined for every import function, provided the WorkBook mobile phone offers
a group function.
Exporting from funBOOK
The content of a WorkBook can be exported to a mobile phone or into a
Palm address book. When exporting to
a mobile, it is only possible to transfer either edited records or the entire WorkBook. All existing records
on the mobile are deleted first when exporting a complete WorkBook. Either selected records or an entire
WorkBook can be imported into a Palm address book, however, whereby a call number can be allocated to an
existing record or created as a new record. Each WorkBook dialogue offers two views. In the WorkBook view, the entries are
shown in their entirety with the name, telephone number, memory slot and memory slot number,
together with the group where applicable. In the mobile phone view, the entries are shown as they
would appear on a mobile phone display. Names are abbreviated and group assignments are altered
as necessary.
And this is how easy it is to edit the phone book on your mobile
Let's assume that you want to edit your mobile's phone book. To do this, select the function "Import
from mobile" in the Start Center. This creates a new WorkBook and all your phone numbers are loaded from
the mobile. You can now edit or delete the records, or create new ones. When you have finished, export the
WorkBook back to your mobile phone.
And this is how easy it is to transfer a Palm address book to your mobile phone
Let's assume here that you want to export all the call numbers from a Palm address book to your mobile phone.
To do this, first create a new WorkBook and then open it. If required, you can change the rules you want to use
for compiling the names in the settings. Sample records immediately demonstrate what effects your changes will
have. Then select "Import from address book". If you do not want any fax numbers in your mobile phone, set the
filter so that the phone number type is unequal to "Fax". Select the function "Export to mobile" to transfer
all the call numbers to your mobile phone.
Technical details
With funBOOK, fun communications has once again developed an optically and ergonomically attractive application
for Palm-powered organizers, which follows on to funSMS. Entries are displayed in colour or grey levels according
to the PDA or Palm OS being used. A special, small but easily legible font is used in order to display names and
telephone numbers as completely as possible. Numerous functions can be accessed from graphic shortcut menus for
simple operation.
Requirements
funBOOK can be run on all Palm OS Organizers from Palm OS 3.1.
Are you an individualist?
Do you want to customise your funBOOK? No problem. With the accompanying Microsoft Windows application,
you can convert an image into the funBOOK format and display it in the Start Center.
Extremely communicative
funBOOK is extremely communicative and supports mobile phone links using an infrared, Bluetooth
or serial interface. And to make using it even more simple, funBOOK also supports the Palm 5-Way Navigator,
the Sony JogDial, as well as the Handspring Rocker Switch.
Complying with standards
funBOOK uses the AT commands defined in the GSM standard to access the mobile phone's address book. A large
number of mobiles offer extended phone book functionality. Unfortunately, however, these are frequently
incompatible with external interfaces and can therefore not be supported by funBOOK. funBOOK can be used
with many mobile phones from Siemens to configure the function
VIP.
Guaranteed as always
fun communications, who developed funBOOK, employs over 50 people in its research, quality assurance and
support departments. You can therefore be sure that funBOOK will continue to be maintained and developed
in the future.
funBOOK includes the following files:
|
funBOOK.prc |
The actual application. |
fMMLv2.prc |
The fun Mobile Messaging Library is responsible for communication
with the mobile telephone. |
fMMLPanel_v2_EN.prc |
fMML configuration application. The panel is accessed
from the 'Preferences' Palm application. |
The user manual and an updated FAQ are also included in the zip archive. Unpack the zip
file and install funBOOK_EN.prc. When this is started on the Palm organizer for the first time,
the file unpacks itself into the programs listed above. If any problems occur when the files
are being unpacked, use the file einzeln.zip.
The letters DE, EN and FR designate the languages German, English and French.
Add-on Programs
To read the manual, you need the freeware Adobe Acrobat Reader. A free unpacker for zip files
is StuffIt Expander from Aladdin Systems.

Communication with mobile phones
The fMML, the fun Mobile Messaging Library, is responsible for the communication with
mobile phones. The fMML has been pre-configured for many of the mobile phones available today.
Simply select the manufacturer followed by the relevant model. If your model is not included
in the list, it can also be configured manually. Palm Powered Organizers and mobile phones can
communicate by infrared or Bluetooth, or by using a serial cable or an option adapter.
Telephone books
funBOOK runs with every mobile phone equipped with an infrared interface and a telephone
directory that can be edited using AT commands. funBOOK supports the Red Telephone Directory
function on Siemens mobiles and the Group function on Nokia models. Extended telephone book
functions available with some mobile telephones and group functions are not supported.
Supported mobile telephones
Siemens
The VIP function on Siemens mobile phones is fully supported by funBOOK.
The extended address book functions of the S45/ ME45/ SL45 series are not supported for
technical reasons. Unfortunately, only 50 internal telephone memory slots are available
with these models.
The implementation of the infrared interface on the S40 model is highly unsatisfactory.
Regretfully, we were not able to solve the problem of the connection breaking down.
Nokia
Unfortunately, the extended telephone book functions available with Nokia mobile telephones,
such as caller groups and a function for assigning multiple numbers to a single entry, are not
supported for technical reasons.
Names are no longer returned by Nokia 6210 mobile phones running firmware version 5.0.
However, data can be written from the Palm Organizer to the phone. It remains to be seen
whether Nokia will rectify this "feature" in a later release of the firmware.
The Nokia 8250 is an import device which was originally developed for the Pacific
market and which manages the telephone book in Unicode format. Entries are not displayed
correctly in the telephone book as no function is available for transferring the telephone
book entries in Unicode format via the program interface.
Ericsson
Newer Ericsson mobile phones (R520m, T39m, T68m) allow the user to enter multiple call
numbers for a single name. Internally, a separate memory slot is reserved for each telephone
number. The names must have the following extensions to ensure that the links remain valid:
/F - fax numbers, /H - private numbers, /M - mobile phone numbers, /O - other numbers,
/W - work numbers. Although the sequence of entries is irrelevant, these links can only be
created in the internal memory (MEM).
Motorola
The infrared interface used in the Timeport series does not function very reliably.
You must deactivate the infrared reception in the system preferences on your Palm Organizer,
as otherwise it waits to receive data from the mobile phone.
Before using funBOOK, it is imperative that you read the relevant instructions in the
user manual.

I've looked for and tested phone address book managers for
a month. This one beats the rest hands down. Easy, intuitive.
Great options for synchronising and copying phone books. |
This is some great software, it is a lot easier to store
contacts on your Palm (sync to computer) and just sync them to
your phone. |
It works perfectly with my m515 and T68i. No problem with
multiple phone entry with /M /W /H phone type. |
fun BOOK worked right away with my Ericsson 320s and Sony
Clie N760. |
